The swimming pools are mostly heated with gas and therefore will bear the burden of the increase in energy prices, which is the result of the war in Ukraine.
Last week, France’s sports and energy ministries said talks were underway to reduce energy consumption at the country’s swimming pools and ice rinks to preserve sporting and economic activity.
France Urbaine, an association representing local authorities across the country, said 10 percent of 108 members polled a few weeks ago were considering closing pools this winter. Pools are being closed as French President Emmanuel Macron called for a 10 percent cut in the country’s energy consumption to avoid the risk of rationalization and restrictions this winter.
