Isstolpsittning” or ice sitting is a competitive activity in the Swedish town of Wilhelmina.
It is organized in that European country in February every year as part of the Wilhelmina Winter Weekend event. Well-dressed contestants climb a ladder to an ice throne about two and a half meters high and sit on it for up to 51 hours to win. Every few hours they are allowed to go down for about 10 minutes and use the toilet.
Not only do they have to endure freezing temperatures during the challenging task, which can drop to -20 degrees Celsius in February in Sweden, but they are also not allowed to spend time looking at phones and similar electronic devices.
Isstolpsittning is a physical and mental challenge for body and spirit.
The hardest part of the competition is when night falls and the contestants’ eyelids begin to close.
Those who want to win try not to fall asleep so as not to accidentally slip off the ice throne and disqualify themselves from the race.
The winner is the one who will remain sitting on the ice throne after the 51st hour has expired and will win 35,000 Swedish kronor or about 3,145 euros.
