Namely, Russia has decided to boycott the Oscars for the first time since the fall of the USSR, reports The Guardian.

“The representative office of the Russian Film Academy has decided not to nominate a national film for the Academy Award of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,” said the statement they released.

Russia won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1994. Nikita Mikhalkov’s film “Virenoto sonne” won the award. The film tells the story of a Russian Red Army officer and his wife who face the return of her former lover during the 1930s.
